Sefton CVS – Hospital Discharge Volunteer

Role: Volunteers are needed for a new Hospital Discharge service launching in Sefton.

After a stay in hospital, returning home can be a bit intimidating for those who live alone. Some patients may need a little help, but not everyone meets to criteria to qualify for a package of care.

For those who don’t, the Hospital Discharge service will match volunteers with patients from Southport Hospital to provide a friendly face to help them settle back in to living independently.

Volunteers will meet the patient as they return to their home, check that the patient has food in and make sure that they have access to what they need. Volunteers may provide a follow-up phone call or a second visit, if the patient would like that, but the support provided by the volunteer would not be long term.

Volunteers would receive training and ongoing support from the Project Coordinator.

Location: Southport – Formby area

Time: Monday – Friday 9am-5pm

As well as offering a friendly chat, volunteers are also able to talk about the client’s welfare, checking that they need any additional support, to which they can be referred to by Brighter Living staff.

Volunteers will be matched, depending on their availability, with one or more client who they will call approximately once  a week.

Emmaus – Volunteer Cook

Role: We are a local charity providing accommodation, support and training to formerly homeless individuals, known as companions, who live together in our purpose built community building in Seaforth.

Our companions come to us with varying levels of experience of cooking and we are looking for volunteers to provide some support and guidance in our modern,  purpose built kitchen. For those companions who need it, you would provide some supervision and guidance in the preparation of community meals.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys cooking, and is happy to share their knowledge and experience with others. You might help the companions to decide what meals they will cook, and encourage them to maintain a clean and ordered kitchen.

You’ll be providing some instruction to the companions, so will need good, clear communication skills. You will also be supporting people from a range of backgrounds, so will need and open mind and a non-judgemental attitude. A sense of humour will come in handy too.

You don’t have to be a qualified chef, just have the experience of managing your own kitchen at home, and a willingness to get involved and share your skills. The support you give will help to prepare the companions for independent living.

All volunteers will need to have a DBS check and a food hygiene qualification, which Emmaus will arrange if you don’t already have them.

Days and hours of volunteering are flexible, but they do need someone who is reliable and punctual.

The Emmaus building is just a few minutes walk from Seaforth & Litherland Train station, and free parking is also available at the centre. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.

Location: Seaforth

Time: Days and times flexible (Monday to Sunday)
